Why does a circle have 360 degrees? Why did a worm gear design from 1862 survive into the CNC era? And why can software compensation never fully fix a worn rotary table? This is the 250 year story of humanity's attempt to divide a circle perfectly, told through the machines and the people who tried: Jesse Ramsden, Joseph R. Brown, Carl Zeiss Jena, Wilhelm Heidenhain, and the engineers behind today's 5 axis rotary tables from Lehmann, Tsudakoma, Nikken, and Kitagawa. Along the way we examine cumulative pitch error, backlash, incremental versus absolute encoders, ring encoders, roller gear cams, and two real world failures that cost tens of thousands of dollars.
