Finding the Light in Dark Times: How to Stay Grounded When Life Feels Overwhelming
My name is Stephen Bones, and I work with shamanic energies.
And I want to talk today about something I think a lot of us are experiencing at the moment — how to find the light in dark times, and how to stay grounded when life feels overwhelming.
Because there seems to be an awful lot of turmoil in the world at the moment.
There’s a lot of darkness coming to the surface. A lot of difficult things happening, and if you engage with the news and social media, it can sometimes feel like that’s all there is.
But, of course, everything has a duality.
Where there’s darkness, there is also light.
And I’ve often thought about this almost like a stick.
At one end of the stick you’ve got darkness, and at the other end you’ve got light.
And right in the middle you’ve got the fulcrum — that neutral point.
That’s where I try to stay.
Because if I can stay somewhere around that centre point, I’m able to observe both sides without getting completely pulled into one or the other.
And actually, the interesting thing is that the dark side can sometimes teach us something about the light.
Because perhaps our soul’s path is not necessarily about having a life where everything is easy and everything goes exactly as we want it to.
Perhaps some of the experiences we come here to have are difficult ones.
Unpleasant ones.
Experiences that challenge us.
And perhaps it’s through those experiences that we begin to understand what the light actually means to us.
Because if you’ve experienced darkness, you can become much more appreciative of joy.
You can appreciate happiness.
You can appreciate peace.
You can appreciate simply feeling good within yourself.
And when we’re right down at that other end of the stick, we can sometimes find ourselves thinking:
“Is this it? Is this what life is about?”
Feeling down.
Feeling fed up.
Feeling as though there’s no joy.
Maybe even feeling as though you don’t know where you’re going anymore.
And I think that’s where the idea of our soul’s path becomes interesting.
There’s an idea that, before we come into this physical experience, the soul creates a path for itself — perhaps choosing certain experiences that will allow it to learn and grow.
Now, I can’t tell you that I know that’s absolutely how it works.
But I can tell you about my own experience.
Because when I look back over my life, particularly the years before I started this journey about eight years ago, I can see a pattern.
Different experiences, different situations, different circumstances — but underneath them all, there was the same feeling.
There was a gap.
And rather than actually looking at that gap, I kept trying to fill it with the things I thought would make me feel safe.
Money.
Cars.
Houses.
Achievement.
And every time I thought, “If I can just get this, I’ll feel secure.”
And then I’d get there, and something else would come along.
So I’d chase the next thing.
And I realise now that, in a way, I was fighting against where my path was actually trying to take me.
But I had to go through all of that.
I had to experience it.
Because those experiences have ultimately brought me to where I am today.
So if you’re listening to this and you’re in a dark place at the moment — perhaps you’re feeling down, sad, fed up, confused, or you’re just not sure what’s happening in your life — I want to offer you something.
Just notice it.
Don’t necessarily fight it.
And don’t assume that because you’re on a spiritual path, you’re somehow supposed to be above these feelings.
You aren’t.
We’re human beings having this experience.
There will be ups.
There will be downs.
There will be darkness.
And there will be light.
But remember, it doesn’t have to last forever.
And sometimes, when we’re in that darkness, we can’t see what’s coming next.
But if you stay open, you might start to notice the little green shoots appearing.
Something changes.
A conversation happens.
You meet somebody.
You get an idea.
Something inside you shifts.
And suddenly there’s a little bit of light coming through.
And one of the simplest things I think we can do when we’re in that downward spiral is gratitude.
Not some great complicated spiritual practice.
Just simple gratitude.
I’ve got food on the table.
I’m breathing.
I’ve got a home.
I’ve got family.
I’ve got a phone.
I’ve got the internet.
I’m listening to this.
There are so many little things that we can be grateful for.
And when we start noticing those things, something changes.
Because gratitude begins to bring our attention back into the present moment.
It starts to pull us away from that vortex that the mind can create.
And that’s the thing, isn’t it?
Because sometimes the way out of the darkness isn’t to fight it.
Sometimes it’s simply to become grounded enough to notice where the light is coming from.
Thanks for listening.
And I’ll catch you next time.
