He Asked a Widow to Marry Him for His Girls... She Said, “I Prayed for Work, Not a Husband”
Clem Kessler had two motherless daughters, a hundred and sixty head of cattle, and a plan that seemed perfectly sensible. One Wednesday in September of 1886, he rode to the Merritt farm with a small blue ring box in his coat and asked Dora Merritt, a widow hanging her brother-in-law's wash, to be a mother to his girls. She had finished a prayer at that very clothesline only that morning. And her answer was not the one he had come prepared for.
Set on the Kansas plains in the autumn of 1886, this faith-based Christian Western is a story about a woman who works from dawn to dark and is never once paid for it, a good man who learns that kindness and the right question are not the same thing, and two grieving girls who guard their mother's kitchen. It asks what we owe the people we ask for help, and what it means to be chosen rather than needed. "The labourer is worthy of his hire." Luke 10:7
📌 In this episode, you'll experience:
