Indro Hardjodikoro is one of Indonesia's most respected bass players – a musician who has spent decades moving fluently across jazz, pop, rock, dangdut, and keroncong. He picked up bass by accident. In high school in 1987, his school had no bassist, so he was put forward for a competition with no prior experience – just an ear and a guitar player's instincts. He won. He took home best bassist. And he'd never been taught how to play. His path to D'Addario came through admiration. Watching John Petrucci in 1995, he noticed the strings – and when he tried them, something clicked. The tone came through. The tension was light without being loose. For a musician playing across as many genres as Indro does, finding a string that could hold its own across all of them was everything. The NYXL has been his answer ever since – the tone is present, the feel is right, and it sits with his instrument the way it needs to. In this episode of Artist Knows, Indro talks about finding your sound across genres, why knowing your instrument's character matters, and what he believes every young musician owes to their talent.
