Hidden in the Norfolk countryside, the Lost Village of Godwick is one of England’s best-preserved deserted medieval villages. The settlement likely began in the Anglo-Saxon period and remained a small farming community throughout the Middle Ages. By the 15th and 16th centuries, poor soil and economic changes caused many residents to leave. Eventually, the land was turned into a private estate, and the village disappeared. Today, only earthworks and the ruins of All Saints Church remain, marking where the medieval village once stood. Just south west of the boundary of the old village sits a mysterious plot still surrounded by a moat. Intriguingly an old ordnance survey map simply references the site as “The Moat”. Could an old castle or Manor House once have stood here? I trek to the site to investigate if anything remains.
