Join us for Part 2 of our deep dive into the life and work of Michelangelo Buonarroti. We return to the Sistine Chapel to complete Michelangelo’s extraordinary Genesis cycle, beginning with the Creation of Eve and the Fall of Man before moving into the violent and deeply human story of Noah. From there, we pull back from the central panels to examine the larger program surrounding them—the monumental Prophets and Sibyls and the four dramatic corner pendentives depicting the deliverance of Israel. We also take a closer look at Michelangelo’s remarkable knowledge of human anatomy and some of the more academic theories surrounding hidden anatomical imagery within the Sistine ceiling. From the famous proposed “brain” surrounding God in The Creation of Adam to other suggested anatomical forms, we separate what is documented about Michelangelo’s anatomical studies from the fascinating—but sometimes speculative—interpretations that have developed around the frescoes. After leaving the Sistine ceiling, we follow Michelangelo through the second half of his remarkable career: the troubled Tomb of Julius II, Moses and the unfinished Slaves, his work for the Medici, Florence’s political upheaval, and his eventual permanent move to Rome.
