Ever wonder how to get a non-stop parade of hummingbirds right outside your window? In today’s video, we are talking all about Agastache (famously known as Hummingbird Mint)—the absolute ultimate plant for birds, bees, and butterflies!
Fionuala breaks down how you pronounce the botanical name for Hummingbird Mint, shares with you exactly why you need at least one in your garden, and then demonstrates how to plant it and shares tips on how to keep it thriving. Plus, if you are close by, we'll wander through the nursery and look at the gorgeous varieties you can pick up today here at Cottage Gardens of Petaluma!
So, sit back, watch this video now and find out:
🌸 WHAT IS AGASTACHE & HOW DO YOU SAY IT?
First things first: though we've all heard many variations on its pronunciation, it is pronounced ah-GAH-stah-kee! It is a powerhouse perennial in the mint family BUT unlike culinary mint, it is well behaved and won't take over your yard. Instead, it grows into a beautiful, tidy, fragrant clump of pure flower power.
WHY YOU NEED TO GROW IT
It is the Ultimate Pollinator Magnet: Hummingbirds and bees literally fight over these tubular flowers! Butterflies visit too! If you want a garden teeming with life, this is the plant for you.
Amazing Aroma & Foliage: The leaves smell like delicious sugary minty licorice when crushed. The flowers smell even better!
Size & Color Variety: They come in a rainbow of shades—from fiery oranges and bright pinks to deep purples, blues, and yep - buttery yellows. Sizes range from compact 12-inch dwarfs perfect for pots to 4-foot dramatic back of the border beauties.
Easy to Care For: They are drought-tolerant, love baking heat, and deer (fingers crossed anyway) and rabbits completely ignore them!
WHAT'S AT COTTAGE GARDENS NOW?
Want to plant some today? If you are in the North Bay, stop by Cottage Gardens of Petaluma for a visit asap, say hi, wander the gardens and pick up your new favorite pollinator magnet! We have fresh, healthy Agastache varieties in stock right now, and more arriving in from the growing grounds each week.
HOW TO PLANT & CARE FOR IT?
Fionuala shares tips and hints as she plants a gorgeously fragrant 'Poquito Butter Yellow' to keep her salvias and lavenders company in the part of her garden still visited by a family of deer. Starting with the one test plant, more will be added if the deer do in fact ignore it!
The Secret: Perfect drainage! Agastache hates wet feet. Plant it in amended lean, sandy, or gravelly soil.
Sun Needs: Give it full sun (at least 6+ hours).
Watering: Water regularly to establish the roots, then step back. Let the soil dry out between waterings.
Pruning: Tidy away spent blooms to encourage more, and then cut back hard in early spring
