Nothing here softened overnight. The ground has gone hard all the way through, every furrow locked stiff, every stalk holding exactly the shape the cold left it in. There's nothing to smell out here, and no warmth answers back — just white crystals sitting on top of hard, unmoving ground, waiting out the dark in total silence.
Then the low sun clears the edge of the field, and the light does what the night never could. It doesn't lift the frost or carry it anywhere — it just touches the rim of each frozen furrow and lets it go soft there, one thin melting edge at a time, while everything an inch further in stays exactly as hard as it was an hour ago.
Half in the cold light, half out of it, a small black cat sits at the edge of the cut stubble without a sound. Golden eyes catch the first sun straight on, unbothered by the cold underfoot, watching the melt line creep forward one crystal at a time.
The bass sits deep and analog underneath it all, with an intimate baritone drifting over tight funk guitar and a dreamy Rhodes, warm tape hiss and a soft crackle of vinyl underneath. Ninety minutes of unhurried 70s grooves, built to stay in the background while the frost slowly gives up its edges to the morning.
