In November 1969, the semi-submersible rig Ocean Viking struck oil three hundred and twenty kilometres southwest of Stavanger at a depth of over three thousand metres. How much oil truly remains in a North Sea giant once written off as empty, and who actually decides when a multi-billion-barrel deposit is exhausted? Long dismissed by European geologists as a barren basin, the central North Sea held a massive secret locked inside thick Cretaceous chalk formations. This documentary descends through millions of years of earth history, reflection seismology, and the complex marine engineering required to extract billions of barrels of crude from beneath a subsiding seabed. We examine how regional legislation transformed offshore rights and how the physical limits of a maturing reservoir continue to reshape industrial operations. Which mine, quarry, or mineral deposit near your own home should we investigate next? Ekofisk, North Sea oil, Norway, Ocean Viking, petroleum reserves, chalk reservoir, Norwegian Offshore Directorate, Stavanger, offshore drilling, oil field history
