February 6, 1988 - Seattle SuperSonics sharpshooting guard Dale Ellis came one Larry Bird hot streak from earning his first-ever 3-Point Shootout crown, falling to Bird 15-14 in the final round of the 1988 NBA 3-Point Shootout. Ellis returned in 1989 to earn that elusive 3-Point title in his fourth appearance of the 80's.
Ellis has the unique distinction of being the only player in NBA history to have finished in first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth over the course of his seven contest appearances. His third place finish in 1998 marked the only time he ever repeated a placing. The full rundown:
1986: Third Place
1987: Fifth Place
1988: Second Place
1989: First Place
1994: Fourth Place
1997: Sixth Place
1998: Third Place
