Before dawn on September 24, 1877, a farmer's son with a rifle lay in the wet grass below a hill in southern Japan, waiting to attack the last samurai army in the country.
Within a single lifetime, the same islands would build a modern navy, sink a Russian fleet, attack Pearl Harbor, see their cities burned, and come back as the second-largest economy on Earth.
This is the whole story of Japan: the restless islands and the first emperors, Heian poets and warrior clans, the Mongol invasions and the warring states, the shoguns who shut the country, the Black Ships that opened it, the empire, the war, the ashes, the economic miracle and the lost decades. It's also about one old habit that explains how a country could change this fast, and the one thing it never changed.
