How do you survive a freezing winter when your fire can fail and your next meal depends on a hunt? For ancient humans, Ice Age survival required far more than a cave and a flame.
A wet hide. A torn boot. Firewood buried under snow. Small problems could threaten an entire group. This video explores how prehistoric people combined clothing, shelter, food, fuel, and shared knowledge to get through the cold.
From sewing tools at Yana in Arctic Siberia around 33,000 years ago to the traces of ancient hearths, we examine what archaeology can reveal about winter life—and what disappears when leather, wood, and bedding decay. Why did fitted clothing matter? How did people prepare before the snow arrived? And why could survival depend on someone else's skills as much as your own?
Winter conditions and survival strategies varied across regions and periods. The scenes illustrate possible situations; they are not exact reconstructions of one universal Ice Age lifestyle.
