About This Sermon:
Branham opens by saying he had just gotten in — he had preached a missionary rally in Louisville the night before, "plumb on up till towards midnight," with seventeen to twenty-seven nations represented — and had come straight to the sunrise service. He says this is the day when Christ proved what He was: anyone could die, but it took God to raise again.
He takes his text from Matthew 28:7 — "Go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee." He contrasts Christ with the founders of other religions — Confucius, Mohammed, Buddha — great philosophers, but when they died, that settled it. He describes the sincerity of the pagan world: mothers on the Ganges sacrificing their babies to the crocodiles, men on beds of spikes, a woman weeping for days on the grounds where the cross stood, Chinese devotees with their hands up for years until the fingernails grew through the backs of their hands. He says he has visited the graves of most of the founders of religion, and that only Christians can sing, "He lives."
He then walks through the deathbeds of infidels and saints. Bob Ingersoll holding out his watch and boasting that he would die within a minute if there was a God — and then screaming for mercy in the hospital room. A local infidel whose wheat and barn were struck by lightning and who died of walking typhoid, telling his children, "Don't you go the way that your daddy has gone." Queen Elizabeth of England asking for five more minutes to make her repentance. D. L. Moody — "This is my coronation day." Abraham Lincoln asking them to turn his face toward the setting of the sun, and repeating the Lord's Prayer as he went. Paul Rader — "In five minutes from now, I'll be standing in the Presence of Jesus Christ, clothed in His righteousness."
He then traces the Old Testament hope of resurrection: Job on the ash heap, watching flowers and trees die and rise again, and crying out, "I know my Redeemer liveth"; David, "My flesh shall rest in hope"; Abraham and the covenant on the hillside; the patriarchs insisting on burial in Palestine because God gave the first fruits of the resurrection there.
He tells the Easter story itself: the two Marys walking up the hill before daylight, asking who will roll away the stone, and Mary answering, "God will take care of that"; the Morning Star moving in its socket; the Angel coming down like a fireball and rolling the stone back; the soldiers fainting; Peter jumping into the water to get to the shore; and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, walking with the risen Christ and not knowing Him until He broke the bread. He applies it — many times He has been with you, and you did not recognize Him.
He closes with the magnet illustration from the Gary steel mills, the story of Mr. Andrews and his wife with the blood clot, the healing of Mrs. Reese from tuberculosis, the old spring that would not stop bubbling, and the nightingale that sings in the dark because it knows the sun is shining somewhere. The service ends with a benediction and a handoff to the Sunday school.
