Log Cabins Will Eat Your Strip Pile

Got a pile of fabric strips that keeps multiplying every time you square up a quilt? Today I’m sharing one of my favorite ways to use them up: log cabin quilt blocks, from the traditional block to courthouse steps to a curved log cabin with a twist. There are really only three things to remember: a scant quarter-inch seam, press don’t iron, and trim if a block gets out of square. Then I’ll show you courthouse steps with a 3½-inch center and 2-inch strips, and the swirling blocks from Judy Martin’s Aegean Sea, one of my favorite quilts I’ve ever made and a great way to use up 1½-inch strips. And stick around for the twist: curved log cabin blocks made from 1-inch and 1½-inch strips. Sew them one way and they curve out, the other way and they curve in, and lay them out right and you get a big tulip. Welcome to Quilt Crafters Corner! This is where we play with what’s in our stash, try new things, and find our own style. Always encouragement, never judgment. If quilting is more than following the rules for you, welcome home.
