How did Daniel Boone’s original path into Kentucky become one of America’s most important—and least remembered—historic routes?
In the Season One finale of The Honest Outdoors, Mike Martin is joined by Boone Trace historian and preservationist Dr. John Fox to uncover the story of Boone Trace: the narrow passage Boone and his axmen marked from the Holston country, through the Cumberland Gap, and toward the Kentucky River in 1775.
This was not yet the wagon road remembered as the Wilderness Road. Boone Trace was a smaller, rougher route built for travelers moving primarily on foot or horseback. It followed portions of older buffalo traces and Indigenous travel routes through land that was already known, used, claimed, and contested.
Dr. Fox explains what Richard Henderson and the Transylvania Company needed from Boone, what made Boone capable of reading and marking the country, and how the original trace was eventually widened, renamed, paved over, and absorbed into the larger story of westward expansion.
Together, Mike and Dr. Fox explore:
• The difference between Boone Trace and the Wilderness Road• Why Richard Henderson needed Daniel Boone• Boone’s ability to read the land and leave a route for others• How modern roads and development covered portions of the original trace• Why Boone Trace faded from American memory• How it compares with the Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, Lewis and Clark, and the Appalachian Trail• The work being done to recover and preserve surviving sections• Dr. Fox’s legacy and the people carrying Boone Trace forward
This release-day episode also marks the arrival of Mike Martin’s new book, The Honest Wilderness: Finding Daniel Boone and the Frontier Within—a memoir and historical journey through identity, loss, resilience, and the frontier within us.
