Karl-Otto Koch was one of the most infamous SS commandants of Nazi Germany, notorious for his greed, brutality, and unchecked corruption. As the commandant of several camps—including Esterwegen, Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, and later Majdanek—Koch oversaw horrific atrocities. Together with his wife Ilse Koch, later known as the "Witch of Buchenwald", he turned the Buchenwald camp into a personal empire of sadism and theft. Prisoners were tortured, humiliated, and killed under their orders. Ilse Koch famously collected human skin with tattoos, and both abused their power to an obscene degree, enriching themselves with valuables stolen from inmates. Despite his close ties to high-ranking Nazis, Karl-Otto Koch’s downfall came not from morality, but from bureaucracy. He ordered the killing of two prisoners to cover up his syphilis diagnosis, leading SS investigators to uncover his vast corruption and unauthorized executions. Arrested twice, he was finally sentenced by an SS court and executed by firing squad in 1945—just one week before American troops liberated Buchenwald. His last words: "Boys, shoot well!" Ilse Koch escaped execution but was later convicted during postwar trials. Her mental state declined in prison, plagued by delusions and guilt. In 1967, she committed suicide—shortly after her son Artwin took his own life.
