We spent the week America turned 250 walking its capital city and trying to take it all in. We also came for something that had never been done before. And on the night it was supposed to happen, the sky opened up. This video is what actually happened, storm and all. We are Matt and Lexi. We travel as a couple, we pay for our own trips, and we tell you what things actually cost. In this city, the answer kept being nothing. BEFORE YOU GO, THE THINGS WE LEARNED Get your Metro card at the airport, not later. The station is inside the terminal and the whole system runs off one card. Arlington opens at 8 in the morning and it costs nothing to walk in. Go early and climb the hill slowly. Get to the Lincoln Memorial before 9. We had it almost to ourselves; by lunchtime you cannot move in there. The Smithsonian museums are free, all of them. You can walk into Air and Space, look at the actual Wright Flyer, and walk back out having spent nothing. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is two blocks off the mall and most people never notice it. You watch sheets of hundred dollar bills come off the press under your feet. It takes about 40 minutes and on the day we went there was no line at all. At the Library of Congress, the most beautiful room in the country is behind a door most visitors walk straight past. Find the viewing gallery. Mount Vernon was the only place all week we paid to enter, and it earned it. If you have five days, give it one full slow day between your museum days. WATCH NEXT We ate our way across this city from a $6 cone to a $60 dinner at the Watergate and put every single price on the screen, including the best value meal we found and the happy hour trick that halved one of our bills.    • Californians Try Washington, D.C. Food fro...   ABOUT US We are Matt and Lexi Stewart.
