Cold fronts occur where cold, often continental polar air masses, interact with warmer, more humid air masses. The less dense warm air is forced to rise quickly over the heavy, dense cold air. When the air rises, it expands, cools, and condenses into clouds. The result is a short period of heavy precipitation that occurs along the cold front.
