The Parade of the Giants (Cercavila de Gegants) is one of the most magical and iconic events of the Santa Eulàlia Festival in Barcelona, a winter celebration honoring the city’s co-patron saint, Saint Eulàlia, often held around mid-February. It is a tribute to Saint Eulàlia, who according to legend, was a brave 13-year-old girl martyred for her Christian faith during Roman times. This is a festive procession featuring massive figures, some as tall as 4 meters (13 feet), representing kings, queens, nobles, mythical figures, and even Saint Eulàlia herself as a child. These figures carried from all over Barcelona are called "gegants" in Catalan, and they are animated from within by dancers hidden inside (gegantoners), who make them walk and dance through the streets to the music of traditional gralla and tabal (Catalan drum). The giants spin, bow, and glide through the crowd, often in pairs or themed groups. The parade moves through the Gothic Quarter, a maze of narrow medieval streets, echoing with festive music and cheers. Alongside the giants are other festive figures like: Capgrossos (big-headed characters) Bestiari (mythical animal figures like dragons and eagles) Fire beasts and dancers in traditional costumes The parade is a blend of folklore, theater, and civic pride, symbolic of the city's rich medieval traditions. For children, it’s mesmerizing; for locals, it’s part of their identity. #santaeulalia #barcelona #festival #giants #tradition #spain
