The US Navy has 11 aircraft carriers and more than 70 destroyers, and every one of them can be found. The ship that matters most is the one nobody can. Fourteen Ohio-class submarines carry about 70 percent of America's deployed nuclear warheads, and right now some of them are on patrol somewhere under the ocean.
In this episode: how a 560-foot, 18,750-ton submarine disappears by going quiet, how the Navy sends orders through seawater that radio barely reaches, what life looks like on a months-long patrol, how a launch order is verified by two people before anything moves, and how the Trident II D5 leaves the tube and reaches its target. Then the deadline: the Ohio boats are running out of time, and the Columbia class is coming to replace them.
