In 1973, our fantasy worlds were full of monsters — but our miniature collections certainly weren't!
In this video I look back at the surprisingly small number of fantasy figures we actually had to create our early adventures, including my original 1973 Miniature Figurines Barrow Wight — terrifying at the time, although today he looks suspiciously like a man with a sheet over his head!
With so few figures available, we improvised. The same miniature could represent different creatures, two figures could become a whole band of enemies, and imagination supplied everything that wasn't on the table.
Did having fewer miniatures actually make the monsters more memorable?
These are not reproductions or modern replacements. They are the actual figures we played with, still carrying their original paintwork and more than fifty years of gaming history.
And this is only the dark side...
Next time, I'll bring out the heroes who had to face them.
