The Ottoman Empire lasted more than 600 years — then disappeared in about a decade. Here's how it rose and how it ended. It started as a small Turkic state in Anatolia. Osman I and his successors pushed into the Balkans, and in 1453 Mehmed the Conqueror took Constantinople, ending the Byzantine Empire. Under Suleiman the Magnificent the Ottomans ruled across Europe, Asia, and Africa. The collapse came after World War I, when the empire was carved up and the sultanate was abolished.
