For decades, the airspace surrounding China Lake, Edwards Air Force Base and Death Valley has been closely associated with military flight testing and training. The combination of isolated desert terrain, mountain ranges and restricted airspace made this region ideal for high-performance military aviation. The F-14 Tomcat is perfectly at home in this environment. Developed as a fleet air-defense fighter for the U.S. Navy, the Tomcat became one of the most recognizable combat aircraft of the Cold War, combining its variable-sweep wings, powerful radar and long-range capability with extraordinary performance at low altitude.
