Islam: What Is Islam? The History of Islam in 12 Minutes

The word "Islam" is usually translated as "submission." But hiding in the same Arabic root — s-l-m — is salaam: peace. This is the full history of Islam explained in 12 minutes, from a desert trading town to a faith followed by roughly two billion people, told through the words it carried across the world: Islam, Muslim, Qur'an, Allah, Hijra, caliph, sharia, algebra, algorithm, zero, mosque, and jihad. It begins in Mecca in the 500s, with the Kaaba at its center and caravans crossing Arabia. Follow the story: Muhammad's birth and early life, the first revelation in the cave, the Qur'an and its message, persecution in Mecca, the Hijra to Medina in 622, the Five Pillars, the split after his death that gave us Sunni and Shia, Baghdad's House of Wisdom and the golden age that put Arabic words into English, Mansa Musa's pilgrimage, the Ottoman Empire, and what jihad actually means at its root. At the root of it all, a single word that holds two ideas at once: surrender, and peace.
