Create true 3D terrain in Unreal Engine 5.8, including caves, tunnels, overhangs, and paintable vertical surfaces.
In this step-by-step Mesh Terrain tutorial, we start with an empty level and build a complete terrain setup using Unreal Engine 5.8’s new Mesh Terrain and Mesh Partition tools.
You’ll learn how to:
• Enable the Mesh Terrain and Mesh Partition plugins
• Create the required Empty Open World level
• Generate a 20,000 x 20,000 base terrain grid
• Shape mountains with the Noise modifier
• Carve caves using Boolean Subtract
• Add local mesh density with the Remesh modifier
• Create a Mesh Partition Definition
• Set up Grass, Stone, and Sand material channels
• Use Mesh Partition Channel Sample nodes
• Paint materials directly onto caves and vertical surfaces
Unlike traditional heightmap Landscapes, Mesh Terrain uses full 3D geometry. That means it can support overlapping surfaces, tunnels, cliff overhangs, and other terrain forms that cannot be represented by a standard heightmap.
