Polyphon 15 1/2" Style No. 51 Disc Upright Musical Box, Germany, c. 1905, mahogany case with turned vasiform gallery above a turned, fluted, and carved Corinthian half-column hinged door, the full-length painted porcelain panel reading "Musk-Automat/Polyphon" with an image of a goddess playing the harp, on a similarly decorated base, all resting on turned flattened bun feet, gilt bedplate with double comb, engraved silvered zither plate reading "Patent / Brevete / SG.DG / Patented," and three cast gilt disc rollers. The lower base cabinet holding thirty-three discs. Overall height: 72" This is a handsome music machine with an interesting early comb setup where one comb is visible and the other is hidden behind an engraved shield with patent "Patent - Brevete Swiss patent label logo. For years, I never realized this machine was a double comb machine! I had it restored by Dwight Porter for a customer and he told us that the box was a double comb but the hidden comb had some issues that he had to address. When the box was returned what a difference in sound. Truly an unbelievable upgrade to a really pretty and rare machine.
