Step 1: Download & Save Data First, download your sample data file (like the Sample Superstore Excel sheet) and save it to a designated folder on your computer. Step 2 : The Tableau Repository Tableau automatically creates a default folder path in your documents titled My Tableau Repository Data Sources. You can choose to organize your files here. Step 3: Flexible File Paths Don't worry about being locked in! You are not strictly required to use the default path—you can save your data sets anywhere on your system and browse for them later. Step 4: Choose the Excel Connector Once you open Tableau, select the Microsoft Excel connection option from the left-hand panel, since Excel is your primary data source. Step 5: Browse & Open Your File Navigate to the specific folder where you saved your file, click on your data set, and click Open to connect it to the workspace. Step 6: Drag & Drop Your Tables In Tableau, every sheet from your Excel file is treated as a separate data table. Simply drag the table you want to work with (such as 'Orders') into the main workspace canvas. Step 7: Smart Data Type Detection Tableau is highly intuitive and will automatically analyze your tables to detect different data types, but you can always manually change them later if needed.
