Bluebell Railway Goes Diesel! | Heatwave Line-Up with Class 33, Class 73 & Hastings DEMU

A visit to the Bluebell Railway for on 9 August 2026, featuring an unusual mix of diesel, electro-diesel, DEMU and steam traction. With the prolonged hot and dry weather creating a significant wildfire risk, the Bluebell Railway took the responsible decision not to operate steam locomotives over the main line, with diesel traction taking over passenger services for the day. Featuring: • 33108 – BR Class 33/1 diesel • E6040 / 73133 “The Bluebell Railway” – BR Class 73 electro-diesel • Hastings DEMU 1001 / 201001 – Class 201 “Thumper” • SECR O1 No. 65 – still providing some steam action at Sheffield Park, working brake van rides within the station area The restrictions made for a rather different Bluebell Railway experience, with the visiting Hastings DEMU joining the Class 33 and Class 73 on passenger duties, while No. 65 ensured there was still a little steam to enjoy at Sheffield Park.
