READ: Just a little acceleration experiment: how does the transmission shift pattern affect acceleration time? Does keeping engine RPMs within peak torque work best? Should you rev up into the peak horsepower range? Perhaps a combination of the two is ideal? Well, in this video, we're going to find out! Truck: Mack Anthem w/ MP8 445C (445 hp, 1860 lbft @1150 rpm), 7-speed Allison 4700 RDS R transmission and 3.55 rears Trailer: Loaded reefer w/ aerodynamic skirts Gross vehicle weight: ~81,100 lbs All tests started in 2nd gear (low speed crawler gear not used). Test results - Lap 1; eco shift, engine kept in peak torque range (1000-1500 rpm): 0-30: 9.28 seconds 0-60: 45.5 seconds 0-80: 1 min 52.28 sec Lap speed: 77.7 mph Fuel used: 8 gallons Lap 2; performance shift, engine allowed to rev up to 2000 rpm: 0-30: 8.65 seconds 0-60: 41.3 seconds 0-80: 1 min 52.4 sec Lap speed: 77.3 mph Fuel used: 9 gallons Lap 3; balanced shift; engine revs to 2000 rpm for underdrive gears, shifts at 1500 rpm for direct drive and overdrive gears: 0-30: 8.75 seconds 0-60: 41.5 seconds 0-80: 1 min 48 sec Lap speed: 78.2 mph Fuel used: 8 gallons Conclusion: In terms of performance, the tests show that high revs at lower speeds / gears nets faster overall acceleration, while keeping the engine in the peak torque range at highway speeds yields the best high-speed acceleration.
