Half-Life 2 Gameplay At the End of Half-Life 2, after the Citadel Tower explosion Gordon Freeman Found Himself under the rubble, being trapped, buried, or hidden beneath the broken pieces of stone, brick, concrete, and debris. Half-Life 2: Episode One begins right outside the crumbling Citadel in City 17, where Vortigaunts rescue Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance just before the dark energy reactor suffers a catastrophic meltdown. Following the climax of Half-Life 2, the G-Man's intervention is cut short by a group of Vortigaunts who pull Alyx and Gordon out of stasis to save them from the impending explosion. Re-entering the Citadel: Gordon regains consciousness in the ruined upper levels of the Citadel and must navigate back inside the core to stabilize the dark fusion reactor, buying City 17 citizens a little extra time to evacuate.
