NATION: What is a Nation? | Cultural Concept | Imagined Community | Nation-State | India as a Nation-State What exactly is a Nation? Is a Nation simply a group of people living in a particular territory, or is it a deeper cultural and political idea based on shared identity, history, culture and collective memories? In this lecture, Dr. M. V. Duraish Kumar explains the concept of Nation in Political Science and explores how the idea of a Nation differs from that of a State. The lecture begins by understanding Nation as a Cultural Concept. We examine how common culture, language, history, traditions, collective memories and a shared sense of identity can contribute to the formation of a nation. The lecture then introduces Benedict Anderson’s concept of the “Imagined Community.” How can millions of people who may never meet one another personally still imagine themselves as members of the same community? How does this sense of shared belonging contribute to National Identity? The discussion then moves to the relationship between Nation and State, leading to the concept of the Nation-State. Finally, we look at India as a Nation-State and understand the relationship between Nation, State and national identity in the Indian context.
