🇹🇿 KIVUKONI FISH MARKET | Exploring Dar es Salaam’s Famous Seafood Market
Welcome to another episode of my Tanzanian Series! 🇹🇿
In this episode, I take you to Kivukoni Fish Market, also known locally as Soko la Samaki la Mzizima or Feri, one of Dar es Salaam’s most interesting waterfront markets. Located along Kivukoni Front, near the Kigamboni ferry terminal, this is a place where fishing, business, local culture, and everyday life come together.
Join me as I explore the market, interact with local traders, discover different types of seafood, and experience the daily activities that make this place an important part of Dar es Salaam.
🐟 A Brief History of Kivukoni Fish Market
Kivukoni has long been associated with Dar es Salaam’s fishing and waterfront economy. Its location along the Indian Ocean makes it an important landing and trading point for fishermen bringing their daily catch to the city.
The modern international fish market was developed with support from Japan’s international development agency, JICA, and completed in 2002. Today, it continues to serve fishermen, seafood traders, restaurant owners, and customers who depend on the fishing industry.
The market operates as a working seafood trading centre rather than simply a tourist attraction. Fishing boats bring in their catch, traders negotiate prices, and buyers purchase fish in different sizes and quantities.
One of the most interesting things about visiting this market is witnessing how local traders bargain over the price of seafood. The price often depends on the type of fish, its size, and the quantity being purchased.
🐙 Weighing an Octopus
During my exploration, I meet a local trader who gives me the opportunity to weigh an octopus.
This becomes one of the interesting experiences of my visit. I get to examine the octopus closely, observe its tentacles and suction cups, and discover more about the seafood being traded here.
Octopuses are marine animals belonging to the cephalopod group. They are found in different marine environments around the world, including tropical and subtropical waters.
Getting the opportunity to weigh one at a local fish market gives me a closer look at the variety of marine life that reaches Dar es Salaam’s seafood market.
🐠 Encountering a Massive Parrotfish
Another highlight of my visit is discovering a massive parrotfish weighing approximately 15 kilograms.
I get the opportunity to carry the fish and examine it up close. Its size, colourful appearance, and distinctive beak-like mouth make it particularly interesting.
Parrotfish are found throughout tropical and subtropical oceans, especially in relatively shallow waters around coral reefs, rocky coastlines, and seagrass beds.
They are known for their specialised teeth, which help them feed on algae and other material growing on reef surfaces.
Parrotfish also play an important ecological role in coral reef environments by helping control algae and contributing to the production of reef sand.
Seeing one of these fish up close at Kivukoni gives me a different perspective on the marine life found along Tanzania’s coastline.
🌊 The Local Fishing Economy
Kivukoni Fish Market is more than a place to buy and sell seafood.
It is an important part of the local fishing economy, supporting fishermen, traders, transporters, restaurants, and other people whose livelihoods depend on seafood.
The market also provides an opportunity to observe how traditional fishing activities connect with the daily life of a modern city.
From the arrival of fish to the bargaining between traders and buyers, every activity reveals something about the people and businesses that keep this market running.
