At The Bushcraft Show 2026, I was lucky enough to have a conversation with the blacksmiths from Thornwood Forge for a deep dive into the world of hand-forged axes and traditional metalworking.
We talk about the different shapes and forms of axes – from carving patterns to heavier working heads – and how subtle changes in geometry completely change the way an axe cuts and handles. The team explains why certain designs excel at splitting, carving and limbing. In their constant endeavour to produce the best tools, they explain that their processes are defined by the design.
Thornwood Forge make their axes by hand, shaping, refining, and heat treating each head individually. We discuss how that allows them to tune balance, edge geometry and steel performance in ways that mass-produced factory axes often cannot. It’s a fascinating look at why handcrafted tools still matter in a world of low cost high-volume production.
If you’re into woodworking, traditional skills, or just appreciate well-made tools, this is a really interesting conversation from one of the standout stalls at this year’s show.
