Scientists Reveal Shocking Genetic Origin of Mexicans — They Were Never Who We Thought

Scientists have been digging deeper into the genetic history of Mexico—and the results reveal a story far more complex than the simple labels many people grow up with. Modern genetic research shows that Mexicans are not descended from a single ancestral population. Instead, Mexico contains an extraordinary mosaic of Indigenous American, European, and African ancestry, with the proportions varying dramatically between individuals and regions. A nationwide Mexican Biobank study analyzed more than 6,000 people from 898 localities across all 32 states, revealing major regional differences in genetic history. The Indigenous component is especially fascinating. Researchers who analyzed hundreds of individuals representing 60 of Mexico's recognized Indigenous groups found strong geographic and historical structure. Northern, central, southern, and Maya populations aren't genetically identical—and some of their lineages diverged thousands of years ago. Ancient DNA makes the story even more surprising. Research on pre-Hispanic individuals from central Mexico has uncovered evidence of previously unsampled genetic lineages contributing to the population history of the region. Ancient genomes from places such as Chichén Itzá have also demonstrated genetic continuity between ancient Maya populations and people living in the region today. Then there's the European connection. Studies of Mexican genomes have found that much of the European ancestry in the populations studied is most closely related to Iberian populations, particularly Spaniards and Portuguese, reflecting the demographic impact of the colonial period. African ancestry also forms an important part of Mexico's genetic history, although its contribution varies considerably among individuals and regions. And mitochondrial DNA reveals another remarkable piece of the story: a nationwide study of more than 2,000 Mexican samples found that almost 90% of their mitochondrial lineages belonged to four major Indigenous American haplogroups, showing how strongly Indigenous maternal ancestry persists in modern Mexico. So were Mexicans “never who we thought”? The science says something more interesting: there was never just one Mexican genetic identity to begin with.
