How can old rare earth magnets become new magnets without chemicals? An animated documentary on hydrogen processing of magnet scrap (HPMS): the hydrogen vessel, the powder, the safety and the economics.
Hydrogen at low pressure and room temperature makes NdFeB magnets crack and crumble into a powder that is more than a quarter rare earth metal, and that powder can go straight back into new magnets. A plant at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham opened in January 2026 to do this at industrial scale. This film explains why hydrogen breaks a magnet, the machine, each step from rotor to powder, safety with hydrogen and powder, how good recycled magnets are, grain boundary diffusion, who has done it abroad, what India has, the equipment India could build, costs and the profit test, and what is still unsolved.
