Welcome back to Sunday Meditation Classes at Chandrakirti Centre with Geshe Jampa Tharchin. This is the first Sunday meditation class of the new term. For the new term, our Sunday meditation classes will focus on the Eight Verses of Mind Training, exploring practical ways to develop wisdom and compassion in daily life. Reflecting on his two months in India, Geshe-la begins by emphasising two things that he feels are especially important: nourishing community, and the benefits of meditation. In this first class, Geshela speaks about: The importance of trying to be a good person How you don't need to become a Buddhist in order to benefit from Buddhist practices and teachings A meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in which His Holiness encouraged Geshe-la, when he came to New Zealand to teach and live at Chandrakirti Centre, not to try to make people Buddhist, but simply to share the benefits of Buddhist practices and teachings The purpose and aspiration of Chandrakirti Centre as a charitable trust: to provide a peaceful environment where everyone can learn and practise tools for the mind, developing wisdom, compassion and happiness in daily life In this class Geshe-la offers four simple points for those beginning meditation: 1. Let go of the past — it is history. 2. Don't look to the future — it is a mystery. 3. Practice being here in the present moment. 4. Practice the Five B Method: Be calm Be kind Be patient Be aware Be content These five qualities are the causes for the sixth B: Be Happy — the result. Join us each Sunday as we explore the Eight Verses of Mind Training and discover how these teachings can be brought into everyday life.
