The armour of the Devi, from the Varaha Purana: the kavacham recited before the Durga Saptashati. It places a form of the Devi in each of the ten directions and on every part of the body, from the crown of the head to the toenails. Its own promise: wherever you go, gain and victory; fearless and unconquered; a full hundred years, free from untimely death. Listen at dawn, noon and dusk, as the kavacham prescribes, and before the Saptashati on each day of Navaratri. WHAT IS THE DEVI KAVACHAM The rishi Markandeya asks Brahma for the most secret protection in the world, one never told to anyone. Brahma answers with this armour. He first names the nine Durgas, then the Matrikas riding their mounts and bearing their weapons, then calls on a form of the Devi to guard each direction and each limb, the breath, the mind and the senses. MEANING OF KEY VERSES Verses 3-5, the nine Durgas: "Prathamam Shailaputriti dvitiyam Brahmacharini..." First Shailaputri, second Brahmacharini, third Chandraghanta, fourth Kushmanda, fifth Skandamata, sixth Katyayani, seventh Kalaratri, eighth Mahagauri, ninth Siddhidatri. These are the nine forms worshipped on the nine nights of Navaratri, and they were named by Brahma himself. Verse 6: "Agnina dahyamanastu shatrumadhye gato rane..." Burning in fire, surrounded by enemies in battle, lost in hard places, whoever takes refuge in her in fear meets no misfortune at all. Verses 17-20, the ten directions: "Prachyam rakshatu mam Aindri, agneyam Agnidevata..." Aindri guards the east, Agni the south-east, Varahi the south, the sword-bearer the south-west, Varuni the west, the deer-rider the north-west, Kauberi the north, the trident-bearer the north-east, Brahmani above and Vaishnavi below. Chamunda guards all ten. Verse 42: "Rakshahinam tu yat sthanam varjitam kavachena tu, tat sarvam raksha me Devi Jayanti papanashini" Whatever place this armour has left unguarded, protect all of that too, O Devi, victorious one, destroyer of sin. WHAT IT PROMISES (PHALASHRUTI) • Wherever you go, gain and victory, and every wish fulfilled (yatra yatradhigacchati) • Fearless, and unconquered in battle (nirbhayo jayate, sangrameshu aparajitah) • A full hundred years, free from untimely death (jived varshashatam, apamrityu vivarjitah) • Diseases and poisons perish • All black magic, bhutas, pishachas and rakshasas perish at the sight of one who holds this kavacham in the heart • At the end, the supreme abode, by the grace of Mahamaya WHEN TO LISTEN • At the three sandhyas, dawn, noon and dusk (trisandhyam) • Before the Durga Saptashati: "japet saptashatim chandim kritva tu kavacham pura" • Every day of Navaratri • Tuesdays and Fridays, the Devi's days DID YOU KNOW • The Devi Kavacham is the first of the three limbs recited before the Saptashati: Kavacham, Argala and Kilakam. • The kavacham calls itself "devanam api durlabham", rare even for the Devas. • It is written in the anushtubh metre, the metre of the epics.
