He opens 2 Peter 1 and reads how Peter tells believers to give "all diligence" to add virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love to their faith. His point is simple: not one of those qualities shows up on its own, every single one takes relentless, repeated effort, and that effort naturally gets harder to keep up as people get older. Then he turns to Solomon, who built the temple and wrote his great wisdom as a young man, but in old age built a shrine to an idol and let his foreign wives become his "lord." The warning lands hard: you can drift from the very faith you once poured everything into if you stop applying the effort.
