These pointers from the Master, Longchen Rabjam, have been compiled for meditation/contemplation and point to the natural state of the mind - free from contrivance, beyond all characterization, and inconceivable. Passages have been drawn from the texts, 'Finding Rest in the Nature of the Mind' (Padmakara translation) and Natural Perfection: Longchenpa's Radical Dzogchen (Dowman translation). Longchenpa (Longchen Rabjam, 1308–1364) was one of the greatest philosophers and meditators of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and the most influential systematizer of Dzogchen (Great Perfection) teachings. A prolific scholar and contemplative, he synthesized centuries of esoteric instruction into a coherent vision of mind, reality, and liberation that remains central to Dzogchen practice today. At the heart of Longchenpa’s meditative insight is the recognition of rigpa - the innate, self-knowing awareness that is primordially pure, luminous, and free from all fabrication. He emphasized that awakening is not something newly produced through effortful practice, but the direct recognition of what is already present as the nature of mind. In his writings, awareness is described as spacious like the sky, naturally radiant, and spontaneously compassionate, with thoughts and perceptions arising and dissolving like clouds without obscuring the sky itself. Through masterpieces such as The Seven Treasuries, The Trilogy of Natural Ease, and The Trilogy of Natural Freedom, Longchenpa offered one of the most profound contemplative maps in Buddhist literature - guiding practitioners toward direct realization of the ground, path, and fruition as a single, indivisible reality. His legacy continues to shape Dzogchen meditation as a path of effortless awareness, radical openness, and spontaneous presence. ________________________________ 🙏 May whatever goodness arises from these readings/offerings be for the benefit of all sentient beings. 🔆 Thank you to everyone who has written to inquire about offering a donation or gift to support this channel.
