The Rise and Fall of America - The Band Behind "A Horse with No Name"

WHAT HAPPENED TO AMERICA BAND?    / @band-history   The Rise and Fall of America: From 20M Records to Resentment and Collapse! This is the story of the rock band America, a group that scored two number-one hits, won a Grammy for Best New Artist, and sold over eight million records in six years—then watched it all collapse. By 1980, they couldn't crack the top 100. Their record label fought them. A founding member left. Radio moved on. Yet fifty-five years later, they're still performing, and their biggest songs have been streamed over one billion times combined. From their unlikely origins as three American teenagers in London to their partnership with legendary producer George Martin, from chart-topping success with "Sister Golden Hair" and "Ventura Highway" to the painful departure of Dan Peek in 1977, this is the complete story of America's journey through the music industry. Discover how a sparse, two-chord song called "A Horse with No Name" became a number-one hit in 1972, why some radio stations banned it, and how the band survived the decline of the 1970s folk rock sound. Learn about their unexpected 1982 comeback with "You Can Do Magic" and why their greatest commercial success came from a greatest hits compilation rather than new material. This documentary explores the full arc of America's career—the breakthrough, the stumble, the George Martin intervention, the internal struggles, and their legacy as one of the most enduring harmony rock bands of the 1970s.
