About "Farewell to Stromness"
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies wrote this piano piece in 1980. It wasn't a separate piece at first; it was the 11th part of a his opera, The Lighthouse.
Peter Maxwell Davies lived in the Orkney Islands off Scotland for many years and often used the area, including the town of Stromness, as inspiration.
The music itself is quite simple, with a gentle, rocking feel and a sad, resigned mood. It sounds very different from most of Davies's music, which is often complex and dissonant.
The title suggests he was saying goodbye to Stromness, maybe leaving the town, or perhaps commenting on threats to the local environment and way of life.
Today, it's one of his most popular and loved pieces — a quiet reflection on home and loss.
