Music explained - 'How it works' - The Chalumeau - presented and explained by Simon Gabrielow

The Chalumeau [the early version of clarinet] in its simplest form the keyless variety - is often an object of curiosity for most people; it looks like a wooden recorder, in appearance, however the sound, and also the method of playing it, is very different altogether. Here I show you my own two wooden chalumeau and explain and demonstrate how they sound, and I then play a selection of tunes from my collection [of which I have collected, and transposed specially myself] that give a chance to hear them actually being played. You will hear a very unusual reedy sound and mellow 'voice like' tone which will surprise the layman, and hopefully inspire the more confident to go ahead and try one for themselves.
