What the Hopi Knew About the Passage Sealed in the Montana Rock

In the spring of 1908, a Montana landslide above Prickly Pear Creek tore open a cliff face and exposed a corridor cut into solid granite — its walls ground smooth, sealed and finished long before the mountain split open to reveal it. Inside, a field geologist recorded three pages of sketches and recovered a single hammered copper disc of the kind tied to the Old Copper Complex of Lake Superior, a thousand miles to the east. Hundreds of miles to the south, in the same decades, a Bureau of American Ethnology fieldworker was recording Hopi clan-migration accounts — traditions describing doorways finished in the rock of the cold northern mountains, used briefly and then closed again by "the keepers of the doors." Neither the geologist's notebook nor the ethnographer's index was ever set beside the other. A rancher's deposition, a geologist's shelved report, a newspaper's four sentences, and a Hopi migration account — four separate hands, none of whom ever met, describing the same sealed passage across more than a century.
