Lyrics:
[Intro — lone pipes, distant drum]
Hush now, tread where the dark leaves turn,
Where nalwood paths twist, vanish, return.
Tanith is ash beneath alien stars,
But home still marches wherever we are.
[Verse 1]
Three regiments called when the muster bells rang,
Six thousand voices and the old pipes sang.
Foresters, hunters, militia and thieves,
Men who could read what was written in leaves.
Then fire came down on the Founding night,
No trench to hold and no world left to fight.
Gaunt gave the order: “Get who you can.”
Behind them, Tanith burned down to the land.
[Pre-Chorus]
No second draft.
No sons sent after.
No ships from home.
No road back there.
[Chorus]
First and Only — ghosts in the green,
Move where the enemy swears none have been.
Camo-cloak low and the straight silver drawn,
Strike in the dusk and be gone before dawn.
First and Only — remember the trees,
Remember the voices that rode on the breeze.
The world may be dead, but the regiment stands:
Tanith survives in the Ghosts’ own hands.
[Verse 2]
On Tanith the forests were never held still,
Paths shifted softly by root, wind and will.
So children learned bearings from shadow and sound,
How not to be seen, how to read broken ground.
That lesson became doctrine worlds away:
Scout first, mark targets, then fade into grey.
Where line troops see walls, the Tanith see seams,
A drainage cut, a hedgerow, a sniper’s clean dream.
[Lilted Refrain]
Soft feet, low breath,
One shot, one death.
Pipes far behind,
Leave no sign.
[Verse 3]
They carry no forest, so fragments must do:
A cloak on the shoulders, a blade carried true.
A word in an accent, an old marching air,
A handful of customs that say, “We were there.”
Their banners are graves that can still march and fight,
Their jokes are for comrades who died out of sight.
Every replacement, each victory won,
Asks what is Tanith when Tanith is gone?
[Bridge — drums deepen, pipes become a lament]
They hated the man who had ordered retreat:
Better to burn than abandon our streets.
But years make a weapon of grief and command,
And trust can be forged where no homeland can stand.
Not saints, not statues, not heroes of gold—
Just scouts growing tired, and killers growing old.
Yet somewhere ahead lies a promise they keep:
A world they might settle, a soil they might reap.
[Verse 4]
So when generals measure the war by the mile,
The Ghosts measure silence, a ditch, and a file.
When armor wants highways and banners want sky,
The Tanith take gullies the maps pass by.
They are light infantry shaped by a wood
That taught them concealment before soldierhood.
The Imperium spends men like shells in a gun—
But these know too well when a people has none.
[Final Chorus — full choir, restrained]
First and Only — ghosts in the green,
Last of a world that the stars will not see.
Camo-cloak low, keep the silver knife near,
Carry the dead, but keep moving through fear.
First and Only — no home at your back,
Only the regiment, the oath, and the track.
Till some distant sunrise gives lost souls a land,
Tanith survives where the Ghosts make their stand.
[Outro — solo pipes]
Hush now, tread where the dark leaves turn.
A forest is gone.
But its soldiers return.
