Could you actually dock with a wildly spinning space station? In the climactic docking scene of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014), Cooper attempts to dock his shuttle craft with the much larger Endurance space station — which is spinning chaotically after an explosion. The scene is dramatic, but is the physics realistic? We analyze it using the standard tools of spacecraft attitude dynamics: 🚀 Before the explosion: the Endurance is rotating about its symmetry axis to simulate gravity (a torus-shaped station, like the Stanford torus and other classic designs) 💥 The explosion: provides an impulsive torque to the station, changing both its rotational kinetic energy and the orientation of its rotation axis 🌀 After the explosion: the station's spin state should evolve under Euler's equations for a free rigid body — leading to precession and the docking location moving rapidly in a large circle 🛰 The docking maneuver: Cooper has to match rotation rate with the station to dock, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, has to line up with the docking port along the rotation axis, which should be moving in a large circle ⁉️So would docking even have been possible? (Even though yes, "It's necessary") ⚠️ SPOILER ALERT: This video reveals key plot moments from Interstellar (2014). Watch the film first if you want to avoid spoilers. The key physics question: after a strong torque applied to a rotating symmetric body, what does the resulting motion look like? The answer involves analyzing symmetric rigid body motion, and the practical question of whether two rotating spacecraft can synchronize their motion enough to dock.
