Every step you take makes another you. Mochi is 25 metres away, under a bench across the street, and he has just watched two of you walk out of the same door. That's about 33 steps. Thirty-three steps makes 8,589,934,592 of you, which is more than everyone else on Earth. So: no steps. You sit. You scoot. You crawl. Then a bus comes round the corner, and every instinct you have turns out to be a step. Chasing your dog is a step. Doing what the police say is a step. Stepping aside to be kind is a step. Cheering is a step. A million people can't hold still, and every one of them is you. There is only one dog, and every one of you loves him exactly as much as you do. Which one of you gets to take him home? What the readouts mean STEP n · MOCHI IS (top left) is how far away Mochi is, measured in the scene on every frame, and about how many steps that is. HOW MANY OF YOU (top right) is 2 to the power of your steps, and how many people on Earth that is. It changes on the frame the feet land. The seismograph (bottom left) is all of you landing at once, with its magnitude. Some of it is not real Nothing can make a person out of nothing. One copy of you is 70 kg of matter, and by E = mc² that takes 6.3 × 10¹⁸ joules, about 30 Tsar Bombas. All 8.6 billion copies would need 5.4 × 10²⁸ joules, what the Sun gives off in 141 seconds. The copies stepping together is the door's rule, not biology. The wide shots pack the crowd at 4 people per square metre, which in real life is dangerous. This part is real 2³³ = 8,589,934,592, more than the 8.32 billion people alive (Worldometer, October 2026). Doubling is why it gets away from you: three more steps sounds like nothing, and it is eight times as many people.
