Ten years ago I moved to Germany from India with a suitcase, a university admit, and absolutely no idea what I was getting into. 🇮🇳🇩🇪
This year, I became a German citizen.
In this video I'm taking you through an evening in my life in Frankfurt — on the ICE train, stopping for coffee, heading to my German class — while telling you the story of how I got here. Ten years of building a life in Germany as an Indian woman. The language exams, the paperwork, the loneliness nobody talks about, the moments I almost gave up, and the moment I held a German passport for the first time.
This is my German citizenship story — and everything nobody tells you about becoming German as an Indian. 🇩🇪🇮🇳
🇩🇪 WHAT'S IN THIS VIDEO:
My German citizenship journey — from arrival to Einbürgerung
What the naturalisation process actually looks like for Indians in Germany
The German language requirement — B1 and what it really takes
The emotional reality of living between two countries and two cultures
A real evening in my life in Frankfurt — ICE train, German coffee, German class
Do I feel German now? Do I feel Indian? The honest answer.
What I'd tell every Indian in Germany who is thinking about citizenship
🌍 MY STORY IN BRIEF:
I moved to Germany from India over a decade ago as a student. I studied while doing multiple student jobs to make ends meet. I built my career here at one of Germany's largest companies, learned the language, made Stuttgart my home, and this year went through the Einbürgerung process to become a German citizen. This video is the honest, emotional version of that journey — not just the paperwork but what it actually felt like.
📋 A LITTLE ABOUT THE EINBÜRGERUNG PROCESS:
The German naturalisation process (Einbürgerung) requires several years of legal residence in Germany, proof of income, a clean criminal record, and a German language certificate at B1 level or above. In 2024 Germany updated its citizenship law to allow dual nationality in many cases — a significant change for people considering naturalisation. I cover some of this in the video and have a full step-by-step practical guide coming soon.
💬 Are you an Indian living in Germany? Are you thinking about citizenship? Or did you go through the process yourself — what was the hardest part for you? Tell me in the comments — I read every single one. 🇩🇪🇮🇳
