Moving from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 17 Pro Max? You can transfer your data directly between the phones using a USB-C to Lightning cable. This guide explains Apple’s supported wired transfer method, from preparing both devices to checking your information after setup.
Many iPhone setup guides focus on iCloud backups or wireless migration. A direct cable connection is another option when you have both phones available. You do not need to begin this method by uploading a complete new iCloud backup and restoring it on the new device.
THE CABLE YOU NEED
For an iPhone 14 Pro transferring to an iPhone 17 Pro Max:
• Connect the Lightning end to the iPhone 14 Pro.
• Connect the USB-C end to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
• Use a reliable cable that supports data transfer.
The same cable arrangement applies when moving from an iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone 17 Pro.
A USB-C to USB-C cable cannot connect directly to the Lightning port on the iPhone 14 Pro. Check both connectors before starting.
WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS
• Preparing your old and new iPhones.
• Checking storage capacity before migration.
• Starting from the new iPhone’s Hello screen.
• Connecting the phones with a USB-C to Lightning cable.
• Following the Quick Start setup prompts.
• Selecting direct transfer from your previous iPhone.
• Waiting for migration to finish on both devices.
• Checking photos, messages, contacts, files, and important apps.
• Understanding SIM and eSIM activation.
• Troubleshooting when the setup prompt does not appear.
• Preparing the old iPhone for sale or handover after verification.
IF YOUR NEW IPHONE IS ALREADY SET UP
Full device migration takes place during initial setup. Simply connecting the phones after reaching the Home Screen does not start a complete migration.
If you need to restart setup, preserve any information stored only on the new phone before erasing it. Keep the old iPhone and its data available until you have completed and checked the transfer.
DOES A CABLE TRANSFER NEED INTERNET?
Internet access is still needed for parts of setup, including activation and online services. Apps, media, and content stored in iCloud may also need to download or sync afterward.
A wired connection does not mean that every part of the process works offline.
HOW LONG DOES THE TRANSFER TAKE?
There is no guaranteed completion time. The amount of data, network conditions, software updates, and additional downloads can affect the overall process.
Allow enough uninterrupted time and keep the cable connected until both phones indicate that migration has finished.
WHAT SHOULD YOU CHECK AFTERWARD?
Open the apps and content that matter to you. Check recent and older photos, play important videos, review messages, and confirm access to your files.
Some apps may require you to sign in again or complete security verification. Payment cards may need to be added and verified in Wallet. If you use iCloud Photos with optimized storage, syncing can continue after the initial migration.
Your cellular service also needs a separate check. SIM and eSIM transfer options depend on your carrier and device configuration. Test calls and mobile data on the new iPhone.
DO YOU HAVE TO BUY MORE ICLOUD STORAGE?
A paid iCloud upgrade is not a requirement for this direct transfer method. Apple also offers temporary iCloud backup storage to eligible customers buying a new device who do not have enough space for a backup.
BEFORE ERASING YOUR OLD IPHONE
Verify your important information and account access first. Keep a current backup.
When you are ready to hand over the old phone, follow Apple’s sign-out and device-erasure instructions. Avoid manually deleting synced photos, contacts, or documents individually, because those deletions can affect iCloud and your other connected devices.
