Social Studies I | Chapter 5 | The Darwin Institute Essential Question Why do people experience different levels of power, opportunity, and access within the same society? About this video A free workshop may still be difficult to access. Through the fictional Horizonte application process, this video examines how resources, schedules, rules, and power shape opportunity. It separates stereotypes from documented acts, explores interacting barriers, and considers how an inclusion measure can be evaluated without promising that every inequality will disappear. In this video • Distinguish income, wealth, prestige, and power, and use a clear comparison when interpreting class and social mobility. • Examine race, ethnicity, gender, age, and intersecting conditions without treating group membership as a fixed explanation of ability. • Separate stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, and check whether the evidence supports a claim about treatment or exclusion. • Compare formal equality with usable access, examine affirmative action and ageism, and evaluate responses to identified barriers. Think about it What would you need to observe before concluding that a new access measure has improved participation for the people it aims to support?
