Francesco Ielpo, OFM, the Custos of the Holy Land. ⛪ ABOUT THE SANCTUARY Mount Tabor rises 450 metres above the plain of Galilee, just 8 kilometres east of Nazareth. According to the earliest Christian pilgrims, this is the "high mountain" where Jesus took Peter, James and John and was transfigured before them — His face shining like the sun and His garments becoming dazzling white — while Moses and Elijah appeared in glory (Luke 9:28-36; Matthew 17). The first basilicas were built here as early as the 6th century. The current sanctuary, designed by Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi in 1924, crowns the summit with its luminous mosaics depicting the Transfiguration of Christ. The crypt preserves the ancient rock of the mountain, while side chapels honour Moses and Elijah.
